Bailey's Harbor
Best coastal shots on sunrise excursions to Europe Bay beach
(Newport State Park) and Cave Point County Park just south of Jacksonport,
which is really spectacular.
There was an old apple shack just east of Ellison Bay that was photogenic,
and apple and pumpkin farms east of Sister Bay. You won't have any trouble
finding something.
For hiking, I like the Mink River Estuary near Ellison Bay. Nature
Conservancy trails lead into the estuary from each side (from County Road
P/Mink River Road, watch for a green-and-yellow sign marking a small
parking lot; from there, it’s a beautiful hourlong walk). I also like the
trails in Whitefish Dunes State Park, south of Cave Point.
For a great nature walk, go to Ridges Sanctuary in Baileys Harbor. The
naturalist will give you more ideas about where to go, such as Toft Point
Natural Area, just down the road.
Drive up US 151 from Manitowoc and you will get lots of old farm shots. You
will also travel along the lake, and there are many pull-offs where you can
walk right down to the beach. The one between Manitowoc and Two Rivers is
especially rocky in the spring and early summer.
On the peninsula, I recommend Cave Point County Park at low tide especially,
Newport Beach State Park, and the shoreline around the Washington Island
ferry dock at Gills Rock.
ELLISON BLUFF PARK
This 174-acre park offers one of the most breathtaking views in the county.
A wooden walkway/observation deck leads safely to the edge of sheer,
100-foot limestone bluffs. For the more adventurous, an enclosed catwalk
extends out over the bluff. Shady picnic area and cool breezes off the
water add to the charm. Toilet facilities and parking available. Highway
42 north to Porcupine Bay Road. Left; follow signs.
